Close call: the ONE day the squad leaders handed out mail for 4th Platoon was the day my Sunday-school teacher's letter arrived. This wasn't OCS or an officer-track "Basic," just summer-cycle BCT at Ft. Jackson. But I grew up in a military town, and his return label said "LTC and Mrs..."

I asked my drill sergeant if I could put a hundred in the bank for tomorrow once when I hadn't been dropped all day. He smiled, dropped me, and must have dropped me ten times the next day just for being a wise apple.

When my younger brother was in Navy boot camp at Great Lakes in 1984, West Point put up a solid win at the Army-Navy game. So I promptly wrote him a nice letter filled with brotherly encouragement....and put doodles and such on the back of the envelope, things like "Goatbusters" and a mule stomping a billy goat with the score in big bold numbers. Needless to say, mail call the day it arrived was quite an event. He still hasn't forgiven me for that one. :D

As a Private E-2 during Combat Engineer AIT at Fort Leonard Wood in 1969, we had many Reserve and National Guard soldiers avoiding Vietnam the decent way. One day, while at parade rest and trying not to smirk, heard the Drill Sergeant say to one of the guard guys "What is your major malfunction hillbilly? (He called all of us hillbillies) What the hell is wrong with you? What do you want to be when you grow up?" The guard private responded with "I want to be a lifer!" Wrong answer.

Send a friends drill sergeant a package containing; 20 feet of 550 cord, a flogger, and a dildo. Explain in a letter to the drill that you would like to have these to used as tools to become closer with your friend. Sign the letter with a false name like "Truly A. Scumbag, Senator State of _____"

When going through Basic at Ft. Knox living in the old Disney Barracks, you would hear the phrase from the Drill, "Whats a Smoke Break Troop?" Those buildings were very old, the wood was dry as a popcorn fart having decades of floor wax laid down on it, I'm afraid the thing would have gone up like a Roman Candle, and just as fast to boot.

Sit on the Drill Sgt. hat when he calls you into the office... Had a trainee do that when I was in basic, the ensuing barrage of smoke sessions that we went through after that was a real pain... He got a welcome to the hate locker party that night.
