Old school is defined by the era that one joined the military.
Old school for me was BDU's before they went digital. NON-PC, don't ask don't tell. Discipline not discharge. Leadership, not politics. PT gear before it was reflective. Basic when it was not co-ed. WW2 era barracks. Jeeps, not HMMWV's. MRE's when they were not cuisine meals today and you were glad to get the chocolate bar. Spit shined boots, pressed duty uniform.

After reading the posts and their lists of totally different practices compared to today, I am definitely in the “old school” crowd, and glad that I was.

This question has different answers, but old school Army is the way we used to train, guide and mentor Soldiers. These days you cant do or say much without getting some back talk.. Soldierd stood at parade rest to whomever put ranked them. We counseled and disciplined soldiers in a way they never wanted to do the action again. You have the untrained training the untrained.. Young E5 do not show they want the job? Corporals acted as if the rules the Army now they throwing it to the untrained. Just too much, but I hope you get the gist..

Digging the dreaded latrine holes for the double seated crapper with splinters and using real cs on field exercises and sometimes a liquid lunch.

-Having a CO with Vietnam service ribbons
-Needing to know the 600lb steam plant for your ESWS
-Seeing a female on a surface combatant only when dependents day rolls around
-Going to Subic Bay Philippines for liberty
-Ever called back home via "MARS"...
-Spending $200 to make an hour call back home while overseas
-Wearing the "Johnny Cash" uniform

You know you’re old school when you reported to an AFB to be permanent party and a foornote on your orders might say your 1st 6 months would be like a continuation of BMT...
After you arrived there you find that continuation thing had been eliminated...
Or had never existed and put on to put a scare into Airmen just out of BMT(as kind
Of a joke?).. I might expect s’thing like this out of a S.A.C. Base as a sick joke..
Some ol’ timer in personnel looking to get a NFG’s blood rolling..
