I'm hearing/reading people saying "I'm old school, therefore..." So out of curiosity's sake, where is that ever-moving line?

I don’t go back that far but for the first quarter of my career lots a senior folks would refer to “brown shoe” army. My own definition is did you have any HBT (herringbone twill) fatigues. They were the best and I was never able to get any.

Old School is abiding by the rules (regulations), showing respect to your superiors and peers, maintaining proper discipline, practicing integrity (that means doing the right thing even though no one is watching), not challenging authority, not being a constant complainer and I could go on but I think you get the drift. And by the way, it is NOT an ever-moving line. It is just a time when military service meant being dedicated to serving and not just some other job.

We did PT in our duty uniform becauae they didnt have PT uniforms and if you pressed your duty uniform plan on getting smoked because crisp lines break the illusion of the camoflage . As for the MRE, the first time i was in we had C rations and heated our food on the motor of the duece and a half. Believe it or not that was back in the mid 80's

Well I think maybe if you were issued brown combat boots .Took basic training with a M1 Garand rifle.Ate Korean war surplus C rations. If you wore the IKE jacket and olive green pants as a Class A uniform. If you thought MCE rations tasted pretty good compared to C rats.I hope this makes me qualified as old school I enlisted in Jan 1957.

To be honest I think it means being close to retirement and "oh how things have changed" since you started your career. I experienced the Army as a 1980's Armor Private to 2009 Armor LTC...the changes were very noticeable mostly in a good way but I did feel "old skool" around the 17-18 year mark as retirement approached and definitely when those behind me share their current experiences. It does feel good to be old skool though! Haha
