I'm hearing/reading people saying "I'm old school, therefore..." So out of curiosity's sake, where is that ever-moving line?

After seeing my son graduate infantry at Fort Benning and then visiting his friend who joined the Navy and seeing my old station for basic at Fort Jackson where the Navy friend is stationed, drill sergeants with balls. Shoot these boys are pampered, do not want them to be deer in the headlights in combat.

Can't forget to add; There was a time where it was authorized to have 2 beers at lunchtime in club, on post.

Had Vietnam Era Drill Instructors.

Wore combat boots for PT in Boot Camp.

Spit shined your shoes and boots.

Jewelers Rouge on your issue brass to remove the pits then Brasso.

Wore Sateens.

White or no Tee shirts.

Had secret meetings in the gear locker with the Drill Instructors.

Don't forget 'butt cans', painted red, properly spaced in the middle of the deck, filled EXACTLY half way with water.

I think MAJ Robert (Bob) Petrarca hit the nail on the head - can't say it any better (except: see bottom of post):

If you ever:
wore yellow, nylon PT shorts
rode in a REAL deuce and a half
know what a gamma goat used to be
were transported in a cattle car
wore and washed in a steel pot
realized your M16 was built by the lowest bidding contactor
lived in WWII era barracks
thought the only definition of, "offensive" was "taking it to the commies"
actually put 2 shelter halves together to make and sleep in a tent
pressed your duty uniform
spit shined your boots
ate MREs...

I guess I would add only two:
If you ever:
* Did PT in your spit-shined boots, your (unbloused for PT) OD-green trousers, white T-Shirt and (silenced) dog tags (and NO "running shoes"; if you wanted to wear "basketball" or "tennis" shoes [remember those?] you had to have a profile).
* Ate C-Rations (...& know what a P-38 is [hint: NOT an aircraft]...PS: we would have "killed" for MRE's we didn't get until later!) Hey, who remembers those yummy old C-Rations?

Warriors Forever!

Old school is any time period prior to the new guy showing up. It entails a perceived more difficult time with higher standards and more discipline.

I've found Old School is what every E4 thinks they are, and what newbies are not.

And I frequently saw goats motoring around with 3 wheels
