To me "old school" is recognizing are pioneer arm forces of the United States; for living us a foundation in which we can continue to build a better military force; for God, Family and Country. National Defense for future generations to come. So God help us / Humble Brave Warriors / Pursuit of Happiness in God / God Bless America.

I think old school refers to how the individual interacts with the troops - he/she still believes in manual labor as punishment for example.

It's subjective and fuzzy.
I had a real shitty sergeant claim to be 'old school' as an excuse to haze soldiers and I knew a darn good major PA who claimed to be old school because he had the darnedest time trying to file patient records on computers and just wanted to be with the soldiers.
I think 'Old School' is really just the feeling that doing something the old way is the better way, even if it's the harder way. I still prefer iron sights to laser assist and backing up digital information on a physical memory device. My dad still keeps three copies of every important document. My grandfather carried a buddy's dog tags in his wallet 'til the day he died -turns out it wasn't a dead buddy, just a good one. Old School.
Of course, there are people who either misunderstand how things went on before (assholes aren't old school, they're just assholes) or they don't understand how things have or have not changed. (No, sir, Slagal Dining Facility has not improved, the rats are still complaining.)
