Running in combats and starched fatigues, then changing into your spit shined boots at morning formation.

No days it’s not about the gear or experiences those that served in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. As Cpt Schwager describes, it’s about leadership style. Most importantly poessing and expecting discipline, putting counseling and mentorship ahead of one’s own promotion, holding those accountable, and for those senior NCOs not caring about what officers think. Although I retired almost two years ago, those are a few of the qualities I saw when referencing “old School”.

With regard to the USMC, you are old school if you were “issued” the SATEEN COMBAT FIELD UNIFORM!

Hazing, paint parties, Hiding in the outboards and sleeping off last nights drunk during field day.
Getting dolphins tacked on by shipmates and having them embedded in your ribs.
Getting mashed with rifles. Getting "Blown Up" during Seal exercises.
Cruising at periscope depth with a TV antenna zip tied to your periscope to watch the super bowl in sea state 4.
Honolulu honeys at 0400 on the way back to the boat.
Man, I miss the old days!

Wore tailored, Starched fatigues. Did PT in our fatigues and boots. Had remedial platoons for those having difficulty adjusting to army life.

If it was done that way when you were in it's old school, if it came after it's wussy.
