USMC style. M-14, C-Rats made in 1945, canvas 782 gear. Khaki uniforms, sateen utilities, starched covers, running the PFT in boots and utes. The old PRT, mess kits, Brasso, M-Nu, Kiwi shoe polish. Calling the First Sergeant "Top", calling female Marines "WMs". Fellow Marines were Splibs, Pork Chops and Chucks, no offense ever intended. Liberty Cards, no POVs for below Corporal. Cigarette issue at boot camp, and in every c-rat. Smoking indoors. Seeing your buddy's name listed in the Navy Times. 106 Recoilless Rifle, Flamethrower, 3.5" rocket launcher. But a lot of my current buddies think I'm a boot.

Chasing submarines in a H-2 with the doors open, wind in your face using a primitive lit screen and a grease pencil to indicate the sonobouys and guess where the sub is, hoping for a Madman (magnetic annomolly detector) hit. The good old cold war, 15 miles of the Soviet coastline. Then landing on the tiny deck of a fast frigate: those were the old school good old days!

Our PT uniform shirts in DLI had the caption "We're learning Russian, so you won't have to." Graphic of a ghost wearing a Russian winter hat with the title "Sovbusters" above the graphic.

I "broke starch" with an M-14 bayonet on my cotton khaki uniform trousers before switching to TWs. The shirt with my greens was brown.
