What do Deployed Service Members really want in their Care Packages?

Christmas and Thanksgiving are right around the corner RP Members and Connections. Are you putting together a Care Package for a deployed service member? 90% of the stuff that is recommended are basic hygiene stuff like toothbrushes, deodorant, mouthwash, and things like that.
Which made me wonder, doesn't the military supply soldiers with this kind of stuff anyway?
What do you think should be in a Care Package and how many of you will sending one this Thanksgiving or Christmas to a deployed service member?
How many Corporate Offices will be putting them together this year? Civilian Supporters and Recruiters here on RP this may be a great way to give back to Service Members - Send a Care Package - more information down below on how to go about it!

PO3 Sandra Gomke That is awesome and we need to connect now that I'm in the Denver, CO area. I'll try to put together another RallyPoint Meet and Greet after the holidays and pick a day when there is no snow on the ground for travel purposes.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs, I know that the care packages I enjoyed had those in them (except for the Red Bull and Monster. Never seemed to get those in there lol). Bottom line, Soldiers appreciate whatever is sent. This is just my input on the ideal contents of a care package.

Anything home made - drawings from the kids/grandkids, home made cookies etc....anything home made is always better than store bought!

I know my son has to purchase personal items at the px. Sending them saves him money plus I can include something special

Marjorie Bellows Even being married when I was deployed I always enjoyed getting a Care Package from my Mother. She always included Red Vines (one of my favorites). Thanks for sharing your feedback!

what ever happened to the Sundry packaged they used to have for the troops... with all the toiletries and writing implements and stationary and envelopes candy bars and such...

COL Mikel J. Burroughs - I haven't heard of Sundry packages, but we get packages like that usually when we first arrive into theater. You can also get them at the USO if you are near one.

I remember receiving several "GI gift packs" in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm. Each gift pack contained a small can of dates of all things, dates were the last thing I wanted at the time. However I would have killed for a can of Yoders Pork Bacon.

Depends on where they're at. I love chocolate but packages of chocolate arriving in Iraq in the summer was not so bueno.

I remember the Care Boxes that were given to all the new comers at the Tent City staging area on Incerlik AFB, Turkey during the First Gulf War. They were basically advertisement kits for Gillette. Shaving Cream, Razors and other hygiene stuff plus a treat (M & M's and Skittles if I recall right). There was a nice note explaining how Gillette supported the troops..etc. Corporate Care Packages, in my opinion, can be useful and nice, but let's be honest. They are public relation tools and tax write offs.
I would much rather see more personalized packages from non-profit organizations and school drives, neighborhood drives and family drives.
Now to answer the question, Baby wipes, books (for those who still read), current magazines with news and popular culture, socks and underwear. I bet female hygiene products are worth gold as well.

I don't recall getting a goodie box of personal hygiene items when I got to Korea, we got ours on the first day of basic. Yipee!

Well if you ask duffel blog porn and alcohol is on top of the list. For me snack items and baby wipes were most appreciated. And please don't send anything that can melt in temperatures below 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Even in winter the postal system will find a way to melt it.
