I work on my relationship with God, with my family and with others. I also participate with a veterans association to help other veterans in need. Giving can be a powerful tool.

I find that reading in a variety of genres, both fiction and non-fiction helps me to maintain and even improve my mental health. As a life-long Christ follower, my focus on the Bible is augmented by all kinds of other books.
But if that's all I did, I would be far too isolated from others, thus the importance of building relationships in my community is crucial. Membership at church, singing in a community chorus, and helping out at the local food bank gives me opportunities to still make a difference as I age.

I travel unlimited miles, view the most spectacular sights, prepare the most amazing meals, meet the most interesting people and sleep in my own bed each night. All this is accomplished through reading! Hats off to libraries!!

I ask for help now when I need it and put my health first. For years I denied my own needs for those of my family, friends, Marines, and the Marine Corps as a whole. My mental health became something I would get to later, but later never came. I have a therapist now and I reach out to her whenever the shadows start to close in around me. I don't wait anymore.

Simple. Consistent exercise. At 61, it is a little harder than it used to be, but long walks allow for a lot of thinking.

In my case, I do a couple of things to help me maintain positive growth from the challenges of military service.

I am a paramedic and volunteer in my community. I am utilizing my military training and experience to benefit my small community.

Also, I work on my small farm tending to our small crops and fruit trees. I produce a lot of extra fruit and vegetables and give them out for free to those less fortunate in my community.

These two activities help me maintain my wellness and mental health. As well as keep me active to help my general health.
