I educate myself of the many (Mental Health) resources available to our Service Members and their Families, not just for myself, but to anyone who may need assistance while they're feeling alone and helpless. I have a lot of numbers in my phone "Just in Case" someone is in need. However, what I have found to work the best for me and others I've encountered, is nothing more than to be available with an open ear, to hear what's on their heart and mind. We all have friends and loved ones who would do whatever they could to help in these situations, just don't overreact causing a situation to go from bad to worse. Be there with gained knowledge of what to do and an understanding ear, Life is too precious and there are countless resources to help in removing the stigmas associated with mental health issues.

I improve my mental health by confronting the pains that I hold instead of trying to suppress or distract from them. I notice what situations bring me anxiety or discomfort and I being those to therapy. I fully hear out the parts of me that are feeling uncomfortable emotions in certain situations and I develop an understanding and compassion for those aspects of myself. I then develop an awareness of the actual safety of the present moment and this brings me peace; peace for myself and peace and compassion for others who may display or be compensating for anxieties as well. Besides working with the mental parts of me holding distress, I understand that the nervous system is a full body system. I work with the body by bringing it a sense of safety, too. For example, in a stressed state the body will fixate and stare at a potential threat and will repeat this behavior when triggered. So, I will orient to my surroundings to see the actual present safety of the moment. Finally, I take care of my health to build resiliency. I eat healthy foods and exercise and get fresh air and prioritize sleep. When my body is healthy, I have the capacity for stress and am less likely to be overwhelmed. As with mental health issues, when I notice a problem with the body I do my best to address it, like tackling my issue with anemia. In short, I do my best to notice and confront my challenges and prioritize myself, because I can only show up for others and love others as well and as sincerely as I can show up for and love myself.

I have a meditation practice, exercise, eat a plant-based diet, and meet with a therapist regularly. Bring outdoors as much as possible helps a lot!

Best ways I have found to improve my mental health is to get outside and do something. 2 years ago, I purchased some chickens because I was lacking in my mental health. The chickens got me to go outside. Taking care of them, got me out of my own head.

The Nashville VA is a great place to get chronic pain treatment. The doctors and staff are absolutely wonderful. The care is superior.

To maintain: must be physically active to move the trauma out of my body (the body remembers!) meditation (Jon kabot zin) and I use the 12 steps to maintain emotional control. To improve: I watch videos and read books by Gabor Mate, speak with a sponsor, HELP OTHERS, and continue to live in gratitude for the gift of life (and to honor my brothers who sacrificed ultimately)

I scuba dive. It is what puts my mind at ease and allows me to truly relax.
