What do you do when a soldier refuses to listen to your directions?

This is a general question. If you have a soldier who refuses to listen to you, as a non-commissioned officer, do you simply put the incident on paper?
Example given- A soldier has unauthorized sunglasses on in a formation. You tell the soldier to take the sunglasses off. He/she refuses.
On the 4856, do you recommend for UCMJ? I've gone thru 600-20 and cannot find anything regarding this

"Backbone of the Army!" My very first (and last) time I rebelled against NCO authority was as a basic trainee I agreed to meet drill at the back of the barracks to discuss our difference's. I met 3 drills and was properly counseled. I utilized that very effective approach a few times thruout my career with resounding success. The SMs almost to the man turned out to be excellent soldiers later. just needed a lil "corrective training". You've got no time for this crap Backbone unless the Army's changed more than I suspect! Make an example out of this leadership challenge that will discourage other leadership challenges. This is a perfect example of "NCO" business. My peers and I would have dealt with this and officers would only be involved if we had a leadership failure! We all know NCO's don't fail

Well I can tell you without a seconed thought ,that if in Bat( RLTW) as in 2D /75 back in 70's? Your ass was down the road ! But that would never happen in the first place. Not sure how the RA would handle that

well the best thing I can tell you is tradition and honor.... from a soldiers first day at the recuter office you take a oath to obey all orders given to you by all above u weather nco or officer ....
to not remove yr sunglasses a simple request, is thoroughly stepping all over the honor code not to mention the traditions of the military... when I first come in the army if you did not do as asked a nco would make you do it then if u didn't want to do it the nco would roll u I the dirt then if u still had a issue beat u into the dirt and if that didn't work they would catch u alone and fix u up right.... then if that didn't work then u could article them as a unfit soldier... bottom line is its up to the nco to make the soldier listen.... it sucks that the new military has nco's hands tied up like this due to politically correct bullshit. never disrespect a soldier but always keep command... I ve had soldiers like this in the past its difficult sometimes but in simplicity a 2x4 will work the best on them

Soldiers refuse to follow orders when we fail to provide them with the leadership they deserve.
Paragraph 2 NCO CREED sates:
Competence is my watchword. My two basic responsibilities will always remain uppermost in my mind-accomplishment of my mission and the welfare of my soldiers. I will strive to be technically and tactically proficient. I am aware of my role as a Noncommissioned Officer. I will fulfill my responsibilities inherent in that role. All soldiers are entitled to outstanding leadership; I will provide that leadership. I know my soldiers and I will always place their needs above my own. I will communicate consistently with my soldiers and never leave them uninformed. I will be fair and impartial when recommending both rewards and punishments.

The fact is we are dealing with a new generation of Soldiers.... Back in the day the word of an NCO was respected. Within the last few years we been moving into a "be fare" with Soldier.. and we have created a new culture where this generation has lost the respect to NCOs, if we use a bite of voice infliction and put out one way communication when its needed.. its a garanteed EO or some other type of complaint.. The result, todays NCOs have their hands tied to point... with that said... bring on the pens and plenty of 4856's... that's the way we build up a good solid case to weed out those none AR and Policy complience Joe's, through black and white... as I said we have our hands tied to a point... not totally tied..

You guys still hashing this out? Yes put it on paper, then take his time money and rank. We're talking disepline here. Allow one to see you have no spine and you'll no longer be an effective leader. But be cosistant , be fair.I always hated working for some one who blew hot and cold .

Sgt,
If the sunglasses is unauthorized under AR 670-1 and SM refuse to remove them. on the spot correction under AR 670-1 .
Then give him an verbal counsel then a written counsel statement if he refuse to sign then put refuse to sign.
Then talk to the squad leader then let the squad leader deal with him.

Provide remedial training to correct the problem. In that case being failure to follow orders. Seek advice from the PSG on what training to provide. Counsel the soldier on the problem, the corrective training you are providing and the consequences of repeated failures to follow orders.

Take the glasses and tell the soldier that he can pick them up at the end of the day by going to the 1SG's office or the Commanders. Also inform him/her that future failure to comply with orders will lead to more severe discipline action.
