The numerous trouble spots across the globe will tend to make troops spread out too thin.

The same problem the military always has—retention. The way promotions and points work it incentivizes those without families who are career driven to get out because they have the least to lose (ie medical care and housing for a family of five, on base housing, etc). When promotion points go higher because the numbers are too high in each MOS, the desired effect is achieved with people getting out. Yet the ones getting out are often the most driven who know they can climb a ladder faster on the outside and have more to contribute which are precisely the service people we should be fighting to keep.

The military greatness challenge is mental health for the young recruits and the current military personnel. There should be more of a need to encourage military personnel to reach out to mental health counselors throughout their active duty service. Trying to normalize mental health checkups would give the military personnel an understanding it is normal to talk to someone in the early stages. They can talk about their problems or issues they are having in their job and personal life. Mental health counselors can help or guide them to come up with solutions to handle their problems, issues or just need to talk to someone.
