Whatais your opinion (As a MOS 35P) about people in DLI or at AIT Calling themselves crypologic linguists before MOS was awarded?

No one cares what Soldiers at AIT call themselves. All anyone cares about is whether or not a projected gain is coming in or not. BTW, they're saying they're a 35P not a Green Beret…..

As someone at DLI I don't think I've ever called myself a cryptologic linguist, but I have said that I am a papa because that people try to distinguish mikes and papas. I have never, nor has anyone I know claimed to be MOS-Q'd or to be honest considered ourselves soldiers. And we are always considered solider-students.

I like your answer…now I'm going to date myself. When I was going thru Morse Code training..don't laugh…You were either a Hotel or a Kilo…98 that is….none of us thought we were qualified until we finished our training. It was simple Soldier talk. Why don't you all think you're Soldiers? Don't take this discussion personal….Honestly no one cares what you call yourselves, the only thing anyone cares about is you working hard and graduating. Good luck!

Never really thought about it. When I went through, I was a 35W until I became MOS-Q, then I called myself a 35P. When I went to Goodfellow, the DLI patch and attendance was what distinguished myself from other Soldiers that identified as 35N.

True, but There was a noticeable difference in maturity between 35Ps and 35Ms at Goodfellow. The fact that the DLI students studied their butts off for a year or more (the exception being CAT I languages) and just generally more TIS seemed to put their maturity level a bit above the 35M trainees who were fresh out of BCT.

Doing so is a lie. If I am an 18x contract, and am in training for it, I'm not a green beret. I'm a trainee. At DLI you were a student/trainee (initial entry training no less). That is your title. Just a word of warning, saying you are a crypto linguist at that point can land you in trouble for dishonesty.

What else are they going to say? And personally, when anyone asked, I just told them I worked in an office at DLI when I was there, I don't like advertising.

When asked what i was doing in monterey, i always said i was a student. When pushed, a student of international studies.

i think it is plain stupidity because at the end of everything if they cannot learn the language and re-class, they were never a 35P. so they should stop saying that and focus more on earning the linguist part first.

Its no different than at MP OSUT when we have 31B's and 31E's training together on nearly everything, with the exception of the echo's spend all their time on detainee ops and don't focus on the law enforcement or combat side of the 31 series, but B's get detainee ops training as well. We referred to ourselves as Bravos or Echos, its to distinguish between one track or the other. I think worrying about what other people label themselves as is what is wrong with the country as a whole right now if you want my honest opinion.

As a current DLI student (and former graduate of DLI 5 years ago, I am here for a 2nd language), I can say that pretty much no one in training here really even thinks about it. We are in class 6-7 hours a day and have several hours of homework per night, and we are constantly studying for tests. We all consider ourselves students here. We are very aware that we are full-time students and that we have not graduated from AIT. If someone asks what our MOS is, we tell them 35P (because that is what we are on track for). The only reason I could see to tell someone that we are "Cryptologic Linguist", would be as a response to "....what is 35P?
Also, as someone who has been a 35P for 4 years, I don't really see what is upsetting for a current DLI student to call themselves a "Cryptologic Linguist". They do so because there is more than one MOS that trains here, and there are a multitude of occasional briefings/tasks that are MOS specific within these Companies. I can't tell you how many items on the action notice start with "All 35M soldiers....." or "All male 35P soldiers living in bldg.*** need to...."
