Freedom is the cornerstone of a republic that practices democracy. Democracy cannot survive absent of personal freedom

I remember going to bootcamp at parris Island in 1959. I found out what freedom was because at bootcamp you didn't have any. The recruits couldn't do anything without the DI,s permission. I rember we were supposed to be filmed while we were marching. The DI. had us pour the water out of our canteen on the ground. So when we took a break we had to pretend to drink out of empty canteens. You didn't drink water unless you had permission. On graduation day it was like being let out of prison we could walk around the base. Be with your family if they came to graduation. Then you realizied what freedom was about. The Corp made sure that we knew freedom wasn't free. any Men and women paid with their lives so the rest of us could be free. Semper Fi.

Ultimate sacrifice. No greater love than that who would lay down his life for his friend
