To me, the word “valor” is more than just a word. It holds depth and meaning for which mere words cannot do justice. Reason being, valor requires action. Despite being classified as a noun, it qualifies on all levels and circumstances when the call of duty requires the action necessary for the benefit of others and to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves and loved ones. And this action is nothing short of heroic patriotism at the risk of personal safety, destruction, and one’s own life for a greater cause; be it God, Country, or just the right thing to do, with the only compensation being justice is served, the weak are protected, and freedom continues to reign freely until God welcomes him in Heaven. This is valor.

It is truly disregard for one's wellbeing to serve the men and women around them. Great response to this question. It is great that you pointed out the self control part when defining valor because it takes discipline with courage.

What does Valor mean to me? Despite the danger to oneself, you find the courage to do what needs to be done - without a word, without hesitation. When the crowds are running away, you’re running towards the danger to save others at all cost!

The word valor has a deeper meaning than the Webster's dictionary defines. Valor is better defined as having the fortitude to consistently deliver mission complete success even when challenged with unknown obstacles. To come through and deliver as promised, on-time and with standards and integrity in check.

To me valor means having an instinct to selflessly display courage in situations where others would hesitate or refrain from taking prompt action.

Anyone in a combat role goes beyond what any normal human being would do to save others by putting himself in harm's way to protect other lives.
