I'm pretty certain when I get the chance to reenlist after my service break, I will be selecting 42A as my new MOS.

I was curious as I develop my "wish list" if there was a way of knowing which duty stations have open 42A slots so that my list could be made practically, if that makes sense.

Thanks for the amazing feedback on this site thus far!

My dude,

This is one of those questions that probably doesn't need to be asked.

The answer is literally anywhere.

Thanks for the quick response!

It seems 42A is considered a good MOS to choose, is there a reason it is so wide open? I understand that every duty station has a need for 42A, but for every station to have open slots is that an indication of something I am missing?

SPC Josh Tharp - 42A is under strength for 10 level soldiers. There is an S1 everywhere you go.

SSG (Join to see) - ....competing with HR Comapnies which are nearly 100% 42As. Usually 3 Platoons, at least one is postal, the other(S) theater gateway strength management.

His curiosity is likely driven by the fact that the ARNG goes by open slots, not realizing AD has a constant need for 10 levels almost everywhere and every MOS on the regular.

Virtually every unit in the Army above company and some of those have 42A1O slots.
If you have choice of station, the world is your oyster.

Can we get a way to link these questions automatically to Army Career Tracker? There's probably 2 a day "where does MOS X go?". The answer is on ACT actnow.army.mil

You won’t get a choice if you change your MOS and you won’t find out till your IET peers in AIT

Appreciate your help!

I thought that might be the case after learning more about how the Active Army doesn't slot like the ARNG does.

As others have already posted, 42As are like 11Bs (Infantry) and 92Gs (Cooks) in that they are assigned globally. if there is any type of unit anywhere, they will need a personnel actions section (S-1) at the Battalion level.

Be a good Personnel Clerk; learn all you can about the job (awards, PERSTAT, personnel actions, promotions. etc.) and don't fall into the trap of being a shitbag who thinks the day ends at 1500. When I ran a S-1 Shop, the day ended when the last Soldier was taken care of, much to the chagrin of my junior Soldiers. Your job is to take care of Soldiers. Check SRBs of new Soldiers inprocessing your unit; chances are the few things that should be on there, are not. Keep good records of all paperwork and documents you handle/work with. Take initiative and keep busy. The quality 42A Soldiers tend to get noticed and snapped-up by Brigade S-1, and do more important and higher-level admin stuff. Good Luck!
