I firmly believe it is myopic to view the Vietnam War as a stand alone event. It must be considered in the broader perspective of the global Cold War in which millions died on both sides in a struggle for freedom and democracy. We unequivocally won that war. We have to ask ourselves what would have happened in the larger war had we not stood on our principles. The tragedy of the Vietnam War was the strategic and tactical blunders we made in expecting the war--war of attrition, incrementalism, failure to seek victory. We're making these mistakes all over again.

What would have happened...did, Sir. And at the expense of almost 60,000 American casualties.
Politicians.
None of whom are listed as MIA/KIA.
You are correct, though. We made those mistakes many years ago, and we have been making them since.

I have 6 friends on the wall. I'm reminded of them and others from my generation.

In my opinion, it was a huge waste of lives. The Vietnam "conflict" is a huge interest to me, and always has been. These boys gave their lives for something, but even presently, we don't know WHAT, except each other. We got entangled in something that we had no business stumbling into. And didn't learn a damned thing from those fortunate to survive.

That word waste, where ever it may come from, puts me into an immediate rage. How fucking dare you! Go ask around the countries of SEA if it was a waste. Only some Americans believe that to be true.

In the big picture, yes. It was a waste. I could not care less about the financial impact of Vietnam. These guys lost their lives over politics. These lives, and their stories, have mattered to me. The United States government decided that they were obsolete.

I can only assume that what comes off of your keyboard is the product of two generations of liberal education and press. The ten years that we spent in RVN gave the rest of SEA countries time to gear up and prepare for a flood that was about to engulf them and that they were woefully unprepared for. If you actually talk with the people of these countries they are dumbfounded that Americans believe that we lost that war, and mention this fact. I did not mention a syllable about financial impact. Freedom, no matter were, is not free, and we paid the cost for others. ......Now I need to go watch old X-files or something so I don't blow a fuckin' valve.

What comes off of my keyboard is the product of two generations worth of hate for the Vietnam war.
What I type is exclusive to me. It has nothing to do with our sorry press and everything to do with listening to the folks who were there.
Not a fan of seeing any SM die under the label of "freedom" for other countries. If they want a republic, let them sort it out themselves. Fuck 'em.
