The legion is one of the oldest fraternal organizations of former military people. If you served honorably, you are eligible to join. It is one of the loudest voices for veterans and veterans causes in DC. It is constantly striving for the betterment of we veterans by backing legislation and assisting in writing legislation that will benefit the military, former military and their families.

1. It depends on you- you can be active in the local Post or not. 2. It is one of the oldest Vet groups in US. They help other veterans, disabled Veterans, have programs for children to learn government and patriotism, give scholarships, etc. Try googling it kid!

The American Legion, the VFW...they are all really good fraternal organizations that champion Veteran's causes and act as a face of the military in communities all over. You will meet and talk to good people who have lots of stories and lots of contacts. They do good stuff like care for elderly veterans, and help new vets with VA claims. It's a great organization if you like to meet and interact with fellow people who served in your local communities. A member of a local VFW helped me with my initial VA claim. By help, I mean he interviewed me and then wrote the thing for me, put the whole package together in fact. Thanks to him and the VFW in general, my experience with the VA was quite easy and pleasant.
