I ride road since I cycle for triathlons. Most enjoyable I like long flat roads where I can pick up speed on my TT bike.

I used to do both when I was younger. Now not so much mountain biking anymore. Sold my mountain bike and bought a better road bike. I'm 61 and my body just just can't handle it anymore. My wife and I have hybrid bikes and do a lot of rail trail riding as she doesn't like to ride on the roads anymore. in our area the traffic is too dense and for the most part not biking friendly. Though the city is trying to improve with greenways and an across city trail. I enjoy doing organized rides 60 milers, centuries and multi day rides.

So what about those of us who mix it up in one ride? A bit if road and a bit of trail?
I used to bike to work daily over a mix of pavement and dirt roads on a slightly modified mountain bike. My next bike will be more of a commuter by design. My back can't take the lower lean if a road bike.

I'm all for mixing it up in one ride! I used to cycle on dirt and pavement around town on my Raleigh X-C bike before starting college. I think a cross bike would have been more favorable because of the tire tread and bike's design.

I ride a Trek Domane road bike and I'm 61. It has a more upright riding geometry that does't aggrivate my back like my older road bike.
