On 2/19/1861 Louisiana State troops seize the U.S. paymaster's office in New Orleans paving the way for Louisiana to secede. In Montgomery, Alabama Jefferson Davis appointed his Cabinet including fire eater Robert Toombs (State), Christopher Memminger (Treasury), LeRoy Pope Walker (War), Judah P. Benjamin (Attorney-General) and J. H. Reagan (Postmaster-General).

What surprised me to learn was that on 2/19/1866 within less than a year of the end of the Civil War, the New Freedman's Bureau bill was passed by Congress. That same day President Andrew Johnson vetoed the bill that authorized military trial for those accused of "depriving Negroes of the Civil Rights." This was 5 years to the day after Jefferson Davis appoints his Cabinet including fire eater Robert Toombs (State), Christopher Memminger (Treasury), LeRoy Pope Walker (War), Judah P. Benjamin (Attorney-General) and J. H. Reagan (Postmaster-General).
This must have added insult to injury to many freedmen and their supporters.
