I expect that the most significant thing which was occurring on March1 was not what we would consider newsworthy. Soldiers and their families were experiencing drudgery and heartbreak on a daily basis during this conflict. in 1861 PGT Beauregard was promoted and sent to Charleston, SC. In 1864 the son of Robert E. Lee turned back an assault on Richmond.

Of the items listed, I would say that Nebraska becoming a state was the most significant thing. Battles, and even wars, matter only inasmuch as they have a lasting effect on the nation(s) involved, whereas a new state joining the union redefines the nation itself.

Thanks for sharing LTC Stephen F. I keep reminding myself the biggest tragedy of this was that it was American's fighting Americans. It wasn't like the war for independence where we were fighting for freedom from rule across the whale trail. Brothers fighting brothers, families destroyed, and a nation torn in half. So I chose all of the above.
