I was thinking about a scenario today...

I've seen many soldiers fail the APFT, retake it and pass in 30 days, and it's like it never happened. But what happens if your OER/NCOER cut off date is, say, a week after the APFT? That soldier will have no time to retake, so does that mean they are stuck with a failure on their eval?

considering that APFT is one of the most basic requirements for a soldier, I think for an NCO or Officer to fail the APFT, it should probably go on record. There's something to be said for "You can't expect from others what you can't do yourself". This is, of course, barring any (legitimate) mitigating circumstances.

Personally, I think if I were in that position, I would be speaking with my CO ASAP (as in that day) to express my embarrassment and my desire to retake it within the next couple of days.

MAJ (Join to see) I would consider being sick but trying anyway (as well as the severe inclement weather CPT (Join to see) mentioned) to fall under my heading of (legitimate). In cases like that, leadership should be able to make a judgement call...maybe allow a re-test in a few days or send them for a medical eval/profile as the situation dictates.

What I'm talking about is someone who simply isn't cutting it. In that case, tough luck.

SGT Richard H. Completely agree. If there's a pattern of failure, then that's an issue. I was more thinking about somebody who shows up, has a bad day, and then no option to retest because their rating period ended just after the APFT.

MAJ (Join to see), just my opinion, but "no option to retest" SHOULD be a situation that doesn't exist. With that being said, that also shouldn't be carried to the point of "don't worry, this one doesn't count" either. Maybe an automatic review process, or an "if you said yes to any of the above questions" checklist that the CoC has to verify would be appropriate.

Afterthought...if you think about it, those habitual failures that we just discussed get TONS of chances to re-test. In some cases, weekly.
