My current home station is at MD and I’ll be moving to FL in a few months. How will drill work now? Will I just have to jump into the closest reserve unit in my area or will I have to use the travel card to go back and forth every so often?

So, here are your only options:
1) Travel to/from your home unit using IDT funds (reimbursable up to $500). Also, you would be housed in a hotel for a set number of nights based off of your mileage from your HOR to your unit.
2) Transfer to a unit that is closer to you
3) Request to RST if you can/when you can.

First you should let your unit know and get with a retention NCO and he can help you move to a unit closer to home, unless you want to make that drive???

SPC Cruz,
You have a lot of great options here. Before you do anything, what I would do if I were you is go to hrc.army.mil/portal, log in with your CAC, and go to the Tools->Position Map (Vacancy Search). Put in your MOS, your rank, and your branch, and see what comes up. Click on Florida. Then try to contact that unit and let them know you're moving there in a few months, and would they accept you. If they would, get the information you'll need for the DA 4651 right away, and pass that to your S-1 when you're getting ready to move. They'll do your DA 4651.

A couple of caveats, you are not authorized to use your GTC for IDT travel without an exception to policy memo.
Your only authorized to RST a maximum of three consecutive months. So, transferring is your best option.
Go to the HRC Soldier portal >tools > vacancy search and find the units in your area with open positions.

A TPU transfer is a pretty straightforward packet with two forms, a DA 4651 and a DA 4856. If you're an RFX unit, you'll also need a DA 4187. Your current UA or RPAC will be able to build it for you, just let them know which unit you're requesting a transfer to.
Once you find a unit, you can reach out to them to let them know but their authorization is not required if they have open positions.
Your commander signs your DA 4651 and an ARCC signs your DA 4856. The DA 4187 goes up your chain to the command level with RFX TPU transfer authority. If you're not RFX, the packet can go straight to your Readiness Division for orders.

The key to this whole process is communication! Communication with your MD unit, leadership and admins, communication with your new unit, and linking them all together.
It can take up six months to be approved if your unit is RFX. So, check in regularly doe your RST paperwork. Keep copies of everything.

If you havent already, I'm pretty sure you have to find the new unit you'd be drilling at (can do this through a career counselor), then you would have to get your current commander to release you to the new commander of that unit (assuming he/she will have a slot for you). I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that's the gist of it.
