I am seeking to enlist in the Army as a Warrant Officer Pilot. I do not have any piloting or flight experience, however. I hold a BA in Government, MPP in Policy and MPA in Administration as well as professional experience at the managerial and experienced level in research, finance and government. I don't have any upfront disqualifiers (criminal record, tattoos, children) although I do wear corrective lenses (to 20/20) for astigmatism.

I don't know any Warrant Officers but I do have a retired Army O3 and current O5 that are willing to recommend me. Otherwise I have two Government Officials that are willing to write my recommendations as well (Large Texas county Commission and large Texas city City Councilwoman).

I've taken an unofficial ASVAB and scored a 78 (without studying or prior knowledge), and meet the height/weight restrictions (5'11/190) but am not in military fitness shape. I am 27.5 as of this writing.

I am not in a mad rush to serve and plan to commence fitness training very soon and will be meeting with a recruiter.

Any advice, recommendations or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a National Guard flight facility near you?? If so, check to see if you can talk to one of their Warrants.

LTC Earls, I did reach out to Army Guard who stated they were not recruiting pilots until (at least) June while Air Guard states that it’s infeasible to onboard as a pilot without experience for reserve or guard given flight hour requirements. It made sense to me and so I moved on to WOFT.

Jonathan D. - You're not looking into getting into the Guard but you want to talk to a Warrant Officer. Since you live in fort Worth, see if there is an aviation Army Reserve unit at Carswell or contact the aviation unit headquarters at Fort Hood and tell them you want to just talk to recent graduates of Army flight school.

LTC Gary Earls I took a closer look at your comment; I realise you were referring more to speaking with a Warrant as opposed to applying to Guard. I will do this, thank you for your suggestion.

And purely out of curiosity, have you ever done any private and/or commercial FAA approved flight training at all, as a resume builder, to increase your chances wit the svcs, incl rotary wing, or going up for at least check flights, even if you have to pay, just to have a more coherent idea of what flying is actually like? Where I was had an aero club, I did go up in fixed wing a cpl of times, however, I didn't make effective use of it, that was a major loss of opportunity....

I'd do more individual research as someone else mentioned in the thread. However, with a college degree (which you have), and a I guess a Congressman vouching for you (which I don't know you've tried or not, to your point involving government officials), would that not qualify you for OCS, or at the very least get a foot in the door? I'm the son of an Enlisted man, so anyone O or E, feel free to correct me on what I got wrong in my thought process vs. actual policy, or how things work now (I'm like 40, now, so I don't mean to tell tales out of school). It just sounds like what I'd do in that particular mental quandary. Either way you decide to slice it, good luck bro.

Mr. Dean, please excuse me as I could not locate your rank to address you properly. I’ve decided to apply, both, to OCS and WOFT to have the best chances. The WOFT confirmation date is sooner so I I do not get in and we’re to get in to OCS they fortunately would not conflict; however, because of the pilot Guarenteed for WOFT, it is more attractive to me. With OCS I would have to apply internally for pilot training.

The Army is taking almost all of the civilian applicants that they can get right now and you sound more than qualified. You’ve done great research so far and I don’t have anything to correct you on. Recruiters generally aren’t very knowledgeable about the WOFT program but it’s a manageable process and they are the correct people to contact. Just be sure to find one who seems willing to help you, as some are reluctant to do the extra work a WOFT packet requires. Are you looking for information on flight school and the general career path of Warrant Officers as well?

Sir, yes, I am! And thank you. You all are very hard to find. I met with my recruiter today and the Sfc was very helpful and seems willing to get me through the process. We made a month plan to get through security clearance, formal testing, etc. Followed by SIFT.

Do you happen to be an Aviation/Pilot Warrant Officer? I haven’t been too successful in obtaining first hand information on SIFT, Pilot training and general personal experience from Army pilots.

I am an aviation warrant, and am going through flight school right now. I also joined the Army through the WOFT program so I should be able to give you some insight.
For the SIFT, just grab a study guide. They have printed versions and I believe you can get online ones as well. The test itself isn’t overly hard but if you don’t have any flying experience, not all of the sections specific to flying will make sense. That’s really all you need to worry about with it. 40 is the minimum and I would say most of the pilots I know have scored in the 50-65 range. Your essay, letters of recommendation and PT score are probably all more important than the sift as long as you get a passing score though.

General experience? If you do this route, you’ll go through Basic Training, Warrant Officer Candidate School, something called Warrant Officer basic course and SERE before actually starting flight school. You can find plenty of information here about Basic and WOCS. If you google the WOFT program, all of the articles written by old pilots about how flight school goes are still relevant. Nothing much has changed except for WOCS only being 5 weeks instead of 7 and the elimination of “dunker” training.
