I am prior service going into the Air Force. I leave for my tech school in a week. Will I be considered TDY? If so will I be getting per diem?

Depends on your orders. If your orders say "Gvt Meals are not available" then you will receive full per diem. If they say "Partial Means are available" then you will get some per diem. If they "all meals are available" then you will get only the IE portion of the per diem which is like $7 per day. For lodging, if you are in the dorms, then you will get no lodging money. If you are off-base then you will get full meals and lodging per your charges. If you are in base lodging then you will get the lodging costs there. So it depends...

Thank you very much. I receive my orders the day I fly out. I will look for this info in my orders. If have to stay in a hotel will I have to pay out of pocket first?

You also MAY be able to find out more info about the lodging and meals situation by contacting the training squadron to which you will be assigned. HOWEVER, whatever is detailed in your orders is what will be authorized. Also, ask if you will be authorized a government credit card (for charging TDY expenses etc). If you do use a government credit card, make sure you FULLY understand the conditions for paying back the card balance etc. Typically you must pay the balance in full each month using your own funds. You then get reimbursed by the Government after filing your travel voucher.

Generally, if there was a break in service, you would NOT BE TDY, you would be treated as if you had just entered service. But yes, it all depends on how your orders read... if you only receive orders the day you leave, I highly suspect you will Not be TDY

The ones I was aware or participated in were about 2 weeks. I know some were longer and shorter. We got per diem usually

Not necessarily. You can go out and back TDY to tech school or TDY enroute. Depending on your specific situation and duty location.

My understanding, if the duration of the school is less than 180 days equals TDY. If more than 180 days it is considered PCS.

In my day you had to be permanently assigned to a base. If you are then sent for training then that is a TDY. If you have not been assigned to a base then it is not a TDY.

I'm prior Army & did the same thing, joined the AF. However as this is your first time, if I remember correctly it's not really a TDY. I do wish you the best of luck. I'm retired now.

Tech school is considered a PCS assignment unless you already have a PCS assignment then would be considered TDY. At least that is the way it was when I severed over 20 years ago.

Tech school was your assigned base and duty station but you were not considered permanent party, your status was student assignment to XYZ Squadron.

Yes you will be TDY and per diem depends on whether you're billeted on base and whether meals are provided (i.e. Dining Hall).

Have you spoken to your training manager (the person who made the arrangements for your technical training)? They would have the definitive answers regarding your TDY status, per diem rate, etc. Also, did you use the Defense Travel System to create travel orders? Your projected expenses can be seen there as well.

I am re entering the military so my recruiter had to handle everything. I leave next week and get my orders then.
