Why punish the whole when an individual messes up big time? We are all bound to mess up once or twice early in your career. This is part of growing up, coming into your own, adjusting to a completely different lifestyle, etc. I will never understand, however, why you would punish the whole because of an individuals mistake. One team, One fight? Is that really the best response everyone has? The team didnt choose for said person, he/she did.

IMHO, any benefits gained by mass punishment are offset by the negative effects it generates. Mass punishment is the lazy/easy way out. It doesn't build teamwork, all it does is create resentment. I've been doing this since 1984 and I have never seen a case where mass punishment did not do more harm than good. It's bad for morale.

I have, for the most part, only see group punishment in the three units I've been with so far. It usually causes the group/unit to be demoralized rather then address an issue. Although, I would have to agree that in the rare case it can be useful in showing how serious or in dept a problem can be.

I don't like group punishment but sometimes it is actually the best method to get things changed.
