I think the Marines are considered as our first responders in times of crisis. I've heard it said in various forms that when the Army is sent in, the enemy isn't that concerned but when the Marines are sent in, the enemy is scared as hell.

First of all. Happy Birthday Marines... I have many co-workers/friends who are (were) Marines. As we talked about our military experiences (I was prior Army), one big difference that I learned was that all Marines are taught Marine history. Every Marine knows when the Marine Corps birthday is. How many Army, Air Force, or Navy folks know the anniversary date of their service? When I was in the Army basic and AIT, I don't recall learning any history lessons regarding the Army. Although, the AF does teach AF history, but not to the extent of the Marines. They have a very unique culture that works well for them, but probably would not work in the other services.

COL Vincent Stoneking - Excellent point. Gen. Olds was a one of a kind with air to air kills in both WWII and Vietnam.

Sgt Richard Buckner - You seem to forget that Marines were disbanded from 1783-1798. One could also argue that the Marine Corps birthday is July 11, 1798, when they were re-established by President Adams.

When you're a Marine, there's no "were". We Are Marines.

It was just on RP the other day so maybe more people know that the the birthday of the -United States- Marines is 11 July, 1798.

But General LeJeune said the Birthday was 10 November, 1775, and nobody's going to screw with him. He was the first to make that distinction.

John Adams also wrote the regulations for the Continental Navy in 1775.

The problem with the 7/11 birthday is that it recalls too much the "I'll fly if you buy" barracks saying....

The site won't let you pull any of the individual selections as links. Or not.
