You may not know (always) what right looks like, it is always evident what wrong looks like.

SGT John Graham - That works in most situations. One time I answered a drill sgt. with "I'M FUCKING UP DRILL SGT".

I'm 65 now and if a Drill Sgt. looks in my direction I still get apprehensive. After basic training I was on hold over at Fort Knox awaiting orders. During that time I stayed with the same company I trained with. It was surreal...they could smile! They could laugh, they were actually human. Still the Veterans were the first down. The other trainees just stood there and we just smiled knowing what was coming.

Some of my fellow recruits in Boot Camp had to learn that lesson the hard way.

SSG (Join to see) My Drill Instructors were not shy about sharing many hard lessons. When I arrived in Vietnam, a Gunnery Sergeant informed us that we needed to stop thinking about family and home, and focus on learning how to stay alive for the next year.

How to iron. I don't know if they still teach it, but I can still put a razor sharp crease in a shirt or trousers.

GySgt Kenneth Pepper In the marines they do - well they did when my fiance was in a couple of years ago.

Unfortunately, the Army does not teach that stuff.

GySgt Kenneth Pepper Have you ever ironed cotton Khakis on an old style footlocker? (With the metal strips along the edges?)?

I missed the cotton khakis by a few years, but I ironed many a set of utilities and service uniforms on a footlocker with a towel underneath.
