Is this place designed to farm data from service members in order to market goods and services? It's pretty questionable that I click a link to see a story and it takes me directly to an account creation site.

The entire internet is designed to farm data and market goods and services.

The mission of RallyPoint is simple. To provide active duty service members, Veterans and Retirees a place to build a professional network of fellow service members, Veterans and Retirees.
While I don't know what link you clicked on, it could have been that someone posted the wrong link in the forum or something along those lines.

Ken, I'm feeling out the website myself and trying to build my profile. Not sure why you got this either, but I hope it did not cause a problem for you. One in the bonds.

I don't believe this is the mission. While I am not privy to RP business plan, I have every reason to believe this is a site intended to provide a service to users, to attract even more users, and perhaps to make some precision search services for recruiters and others seeking to get in touch with a few carefully selected service members. I do not anticipate RP would benefit from mass data sales of individually identifiable information. More likely RP bundles services for a premium fee for recruiters and similarly limited precision targeted contacts. There are simpler and easier ways to collect and market mailing individually identified data.

It would not surprise me if the RP business model involves eventual fees to employers for posting jobs or for employer accounts in some manner. The product would be marketing access to us. If that's true, I'm ok with it as long as it doesn't interfere with our ability to network.
