Too much arguing over which 5-star was highest, so they promoted George Washington to General of the Armies of the United States.. 6 stars

General George Washington. He always has the highest rank no matter what. So if there is a 5 star General Washington becomes a 6 Star.

Actually Pershing is considered a six star (General of the Armies) which would make Washington a Seven star! However, the POTUS has a military rank which outranks all (also held by Washington): Commander-in-Chief.
