5 stars, in a pentagon pattern, is highest. General of the Armies. There have only been a few. Pershing was the only 1 in WWI. Eisenhower, MacArthur, and Marshall were the three in WWII and Nimitz and Halsey were 5 star, Admiral of the Navies, in WW II I think.

Sgt Michael Cullen
In WW2, there was also Omar Bradley, George C. Marshall and Henry H. "Hap" Arnold, who also later held the 5 star rank as the only General of the Air Force. Navy had, as you correctly point out, Nimitz and Halsey, but also Ernest King.

Negative. Five Star General: General of the Army, Six Star General: General of the Armies (The Rank for this was actually made too, imagine Eisenhower's Five Star General Rank with a Sixth star in the middle)... However, Washington's posthumous promotion (I believe in 1976) stated that he would now outrank all Generals past, present, and future... So does that make him the one seven star General? At a minimum, it makes him the highest ranking six star. Regardless, the POTUS has a military rank that still outranks them (which was also held by Washington): Commander-in-Chief.

About three ranks to low SGT. Check my other comments for some history. However the top answer is actually: Commander-in-Chief (military rank given to POTUS).

Air Force E-9 CMS is a scary rank and this is from a prior Specialist mafioso. Not to be messed with.
