I actually enjoyed Howard AFB Panama. I thought it was a very nice base. I also thought Carswell was a nice base also. I of course greatly miss and am still get angry over the closing of Griffiss AFB, it was my first duty station. I drive by there all the time, but have never been back on the base since it closed.

I would say any base that is not in a rural community like Altus, Vance and Cannon.

If I were chose today

I would pick

McChord because I would live in DT Seattle

Travis because I would be near San Fran.

McDill in Tampa

March ARB I would live in North Hollywood if I were stationed there.

Nellis/Creech AFB in Fabulous Vegas, I lived there for 4.

Offutt, Downtown Omaha is pretty urban and hip now.

Middle of the run bases I could tolerate, one I actually live near.

Kirtland, in the "Bourque" of New Mexico

Tinker in OKC

JRB Fort Worth

Buckely in Denver/Aurora

Whiteman, but reside in Kansas City

Fairchild in Spokane

Bases to avoid

Altus
Cannon
Vance
Laughlin
Columbus
Beale
Goodfellow
Dyess
Grand Forks
Minot
Malmstrom
FE Warren
McGuire

I did not mind day trips to
Charleston
Seymor Johnson
Eglin
Langley

Those are not bad for a few days I could see myself get tired of them fast. Basically I would chose bases that were near cities with descent culture and entertainment. I would avoid bases in Rural areas where the entertainment is Church and Cow tipping.

At least you have Lewis/McChord near Seattle. Granted it is really in Spanoway and outside Tacompton which are not that awesome. But Its a 45 minute drive to DT Seattle. I had friends living in badass high rise apartments in Seattle while stationed at McChord.

I don't know how we got them either. My guess is that many places were in areas that were not all that at one time but then cool cities grew closer. The SAD thing is the good bases are the first to close. The ones near big cities tend to get it because 1 the civilian populace sees it as a real estate to put more houses on like Lowery in Denver. The other reason is that major cities are not impacted that much by a base closure. I am sure Seattle would give two fcks if McChord Closed, on the other hand Tacoma might take a small hit.

In small towns they see it the opposite way. They see it as no longer having a cash cow in their backyard to exploit.

Eglin AFB won best base in the AF back in 2005. The local town of Destin Beach is a resort area and is amazing. I also enjoyed Hurlbert Field which is in close proximity to Eglin. I really enjoyed the TDY's to both of these bases.
