I have researched different tips and tricks for writing a cover letter and I am at a loss. I have seen ones that can be funny and others that are really professional. I am wondering how to go about doing this as I want to stand out but not lose a potential interview because I was too professional or too much on the lite side. I am in the process of getting one made for a position that I'm applying for next month. Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

A cover letter is your hook, therefore your cover letter needs to be oriented to that specific job that you want. So research your potential employer and tailor your cover letter to fit the needs of what the employer seeks.

TSgt Steve Waide - And if you are trying to date, don't use Old Spice as your cologne because that works for my generation and not Today's; the other Cover letter.

Find out what your state's Peace Officers Code of Ethics is, read, and understand it
Then write a cover letter that is short and concise that illustrates your adherence to the Code of Ethics.
If your state doesn't have one look at California's.

Thanks. Yeah I'm going to be applying to Tucson, AZ Police Dept. I have been scouring their site to get as much info as I can about them. I have also been in close contact to one of the police recruiters and she has been amazing at helping me prepare and answering all of my questions.

I was on the Goodyear PD up in the Phoenix area, good luck and watch your 6. The process will take about 6 months just to get finally chosen to go to the academy which is 6 months long and is way harder than basic training. In Phx at Sheriff Joe's Academy, running is the main thing at PT. We started out at 2 miles and on average we ran 5 miles with a 8 mile graduation run for fun up/down South Mountain. Injuries are on you and you get 3 days off before being dropped from the program. What helped me heal faster was the fact that we went to school 4 days and were off for 3 days. I would hit the jacuzzi every night after class to soothe my old muscles. I was the 2nd oldest to graduate at 46yrs old. So it can be done. You can fail 1 exam and retest to pass, if you fail that you are out. The gun range has a high failure rate, too. We lost 6 people at the range and we were in month 4 of the academy. Some PD's will let you go and others will put you into the next starting class.

Thanks for the comment. I have been in touch with a friend who retired from the dept and I have also been in close contact with the PD recruiter. I have asked them the hard questions about how they like it and their thoughts on the leaders.

TSgt Steve Waide ,
In an industry such as law enforcement, it can become quite competitive. However the goal is to stand out. I have attached a link of some successful examples. Hope this helps in your pursuit. Be well.

Awesome thank you for the link. I will check it out. I don't think that I looked at this site. Most of the ones that came up were from the bigger job sites out there. I know there is no right or wrong answer to this question, only tips on what has and hasn't worked for other people. Every situation is going to be different depending on the HR staff and types of people applying.
