Also an excellent book. I remember reading it sitting on an airfield waiting on an extract....that was an interesting day....

Three way tie between...
"Oh, What a Lovely War"- Satire of WWI produced in the '60s.
"Master and Commander"- Finally, a 'good' film focusing on the Georgian period of naval history!
"A Bridge too Far"- Star-studded, and reasonably historically accurate portrayal of Operation Market Garden.
...honorable mentions?
"The Devil's Brigade"- Gritty and entertaining... if somewhat fanciful.
"Kelly's Heroes"- a real 'romp'.
"Zulu Dawn"- Impressive acting by some fading actors in their swansong.
"Son of the Morning Star"-Best on Custer ever made.
"Gettysburg/Gods and General" (mostly due to superb casting/writing/fillmin... though skimpy on historical accuracy.

Master and Commander is also part of an excellent series books by Patrick O'Brian. Reminiscent of the Horatio Hornblower books.

SFC Bryan Stetzer - LOL! They teach us the , "Rule of Three"... old habits are hard to break. I'm also very familiar with both O'Brian's works and the Hornblower series (go figure, right?) Bernard Cornwell's "Sharpe's Rifles" series is a favorite too... though like many "war serials", the historian in me cringes a bit at the Sean Bean teledrama.

Bernard Cornwell is one of my favorite authors. I think I’ve read all of his historical fiction. If you haven’t read them, I highly recommend his Saxon Chronicles series and the Grail Quest series. The Saxon Chronicles books were also made into a mini-series on Netflix called “The Last Kingdom”, which is MUCH better than the BBC Sharpe’s series. Another one by him that’s excellent, and a stand-alone novel, is “The Gallows Thief”.

SFC Bryan Stetzer - Multiple upvotes if I had them for Master and Commander, and for Horatio Hornblower!

Interesting choices. Bat 21 is one I hadn’t seen in years, but excellent. I wouldn’t have thought of Forrest Gump, but totally valid, and an excellent movie.
