I know the first enlistment in the National Guard is six years and 2 IRR. Not sure after that. Not really sure about the USMC Reserves. Best bet is call a recruiter.

Conner Fleury That is information that you could easily look up. Have you decided to find someone to run your business in your absence, so that you can make a serious commitment to serving our nation?

Know What You Are Committing To
Joining the military is a big commitment - by both you and the military. This commitment is not to be taken lightly.

Conner Fleury - Will you find someone to run your business while you are in training for an extended amount of time, monthly weekend drills, two weeks a year of annual Reserve training, and a good chance of a deployment? The military commitment is serious and should not be taken lightly.

Army Reserve Time Commitment | Army.com
Everyone joining the Army is required to enlist for a minimum of 8 years. Most spend a portion of that time on active duty (2-4 years) and the rest in a Reserve component. It is possible to sign up for all eight years to be served in the Reserves, but talk to your recruiter before you sign!

You already know the best answer (6 and 2). A few years back the Army offered an IRR only enlistment so you could potentially only serve at Basic and AIT and coast the next 7 1/2 years in the IRR (unless there was a major mobilization). Doing the right thing by asking around. Best of Luck!
