I
dont have any regrets with my service. I made all the choices I made with the
best knowledge that I had at the time, but given the opportunity I would have
taken charge of my own career much sooner, instead of waiting on my leadership.
Simply I would have not been so lazy with ACCP and other career progression
that I either knew or should have known to do.

Should have went combat arms! Promotions are way faster, discipline is better, and more opportunities to train. Don't get me wrong, being an MP is has some upsides such as specific schools to our MOS but overall I wish I would have went Infantry.

I see your point, but I have been Signal my whole career and I can say that I have been blessed by the number and frequency of my promotions. You have to find a mentor that is doing all the right things for promotion and responsibility and follow their example.

I understand your point Mason, but look at the duties and
responsibilities of an MP at different levels. Then look at the duties and responsibilities
of the equivalent rank in other MOSs. Yes all NCOs have some of the same
general duties; however, being a SGT as a MP is far different than being a SGT
in the infantry, or tankers. If you think of each MOS as a pyramid most of the combat
arms have a very short wide pyramid. MPs have a narrow tall one. Not saying
that any MOS is better than the other, but I think that being a SGT as infantry
or tanker, you would be treated more like a senior SPC; where as a MP SGT you
are given more responsibility. I come to this with a logical thought of
numbers. With the infantry you have more SGTs per squad, or team. With MPs you
have fewer. This is also the reason the points are so low within these MOSs,
more are needed. So in regards to you answer I think the question I would ask
is do you want to promote quickly with others, or do you want to be more of a
expert in your field and promoted as a individual? Again this is just a
comparison in face value. The same could be said for any other MOSs just using
examples that are common, and easy to see.

MSG, I believe I have found my mentor. It's pretty tough to follow in his footsteps though, he's one hell of an NCO. I do my best though.

SGT Baldwin, I agree with you that as an MP SGT we have more responsibility such as Patrol Supervisor for the Law Enforcement of a whole base. But we definitely have more NCOs per squad. We have 1 SSG and 3 SGTs per squad while infantry squads have 1 SSG and only two SGTs.

I would have went OCS or Green to Gold when I had the chance. I finish my Masters degree next month but I have no options to become an Officer (Only a pilot which I have no desire to fly). I love being an NCO but I've had some terrible experiences with Officers. I'm honestly a little bitter that I have to listen to some Officers who have zero leadership ability and I have the same or higher level of education than them. If I could do it again I would focus a little more on myself.

What is the one thing that you wish you had done differently in the military?

I think I would have made some different life choices as well as military ones.  I now encourage my kids to stay single for awhile and, if they want to join the military, look into enlisting in the Navy - you get to travel the world, see cool new places (and not have to worry so much about the people there actively trying to kill you).  Then, after their initial tour, they could decide whether to go to the dark side (officer world), get out, or stay where they were.  Or they could pick another service and give it a shot.

I guess for me I would have looked out for number 1 a bit more when I became a SFC, a lil disgruntled about not making MSG, but I did ensure that my Soldiers ALWAYS were taken care of and progressed as they deserved it as best I could.

Sounds silly, but I asked not to be platoon guide in basic training. I told theDS that I didn't want to hurt the team by being in charge and not knowing anything.

No complaints... I would not be as fortunate now had I not done those assignment. Even getting hurt fast roping had a purpose.

I wished i would have taken advantage of going to school earlier in my career. It might have been a little easier and i should not have got out the first time. Wasn't a good choice and now i trying to catch up to my peers.
