None of the above, it's the camaraderie. Just about everything else can be found in civilian life at better prices. some of my most enjoyable times were spent with my fellow shipmates. The rest is fluff.

I reside in San Antonio...which is labeled "Military Town USA". For the most part they love the military here in Texas. We get treated with respect and we are appreciated. There are discounts most places you go. Free park here and there. Toll roads are free. Jobs are plenty thanks to Vet preference. That is my fav aspect(s).

That's really awesome. San Antonio is one of the cities I'm hoping to go to if I get back in.

What is your favorite aspect of the military life? Tax free shopping at the commissary or Exchange? Military discounts everywhere you go?

1. The camaraderie.
2. Medical. Had 3 kids born in military hospitals at the total cost of $69 (the hospital meals).
3. The travel.
Never was a big commissary or exchange shopper in CONUS. Mostly did it for the convenience. Lived very close to MCRD/NTC San Diego for a few years. In Florida we had a Winn-Dixie a block from our apartment, so did most of our shopping there instead of a 30+ minute drive to the AFB.

The rank hierarchy even though promotions need a crap ton of work to be the way they should be. Also the medical and dental. It's nice to know that if something comes up health wise I won't be looking at a multi-thousand dollar bill to have to pay off.

For me, I think it's a combination of the two I mentioned and the social life I had as well when I was in. You meet that right group of people and that'd be a wrap. I met some of my best friends in the military and shared some great memories with them.

Yeah...the really good friends I have had ...man....I really love them...male and female. There is nothing like battle buddies. I have been retired for 3 years now...and I must say that we have moved on...and that is ok. It happens. Everything is impermanent...but I have the memories and my friends know we shared special moments that cannot be replaced. being in the military has enriched my life and caused me to think about things from various Point of views. I know I am getting older because I find myself sitting and I will see something and suddenly I will have a vivid flashback of some memory from the past. Even thinking about all I have done in 22 years is overwhelming. We really have done a lot! And seen a lot of shit! Sometimes I feel like those hobbits at the end of Lord of the rings...you know where they are sitting in the pub...and they are just looking around at everyone...those Hobbits in the Shire had no idea what happened far away...but those 4 did. I feel that way a lot when I walk around in public at times. It is a different understanding of life that we have. We see freedom very different I feel.

The camaraderie is what I love the most, but in regards to perks, I'd probably say the little things that are typically put together for the families. For instance, next month the USO is bringing Sesame Street to the base and I think that's a great experience for my young daughters.

The Espirit de Corps hands down! There's nothing like running down Ardennes on Ft. Bragg and Battallion Ave on Ft. Hood and hearing highly motivated, highly dedicated Soldiers sounding off loud and proud on a company run! I just love it! Not to mention pass and review ceremonies, etc. My wife went to the 82nd Airborne review during All-American week during this deployment, and she absolutely loved it. Every time I see, or participate in one, I feel a sense of pride knowing that I'm standing tall, looking good, and that I oughtta be in Hollywood.

It's the honor to serve as others have served before me and for me. It's feeling like I have earned the rights I was born with.
