Being a Wheeled Mechanic, I've got to work on and drive some of the coolest vehicles the Army has to offer and also got to experience some of the other Service's equipment as well. Those of that are "gear heads" and enthusiast are always talking about the vehicles and their capabilitites.
Strictly from a comfort, stylish, fun factor stand point, what is your favorite vehicle to drive or be a passenger in? Don't only judge on how well they can take a hit or how much they break down.
I realize that some may have cooler experiences than others, ie Pilots and their planes, Navy and aircraft carriers, Astronaughts and thier space shuttles. That's all cool. Hell I would brag about that stuff too if I had the chance.
My favorite is the old M 35 2 1/2 ton truck. I loved the standard transmission and the fact that it could use virutally any kind of fuel.
Didn't get to drive any cool guy vehicles like SFC Gates. Those are indeed impressive. Nope just a regular ol utility CUCV for me. But it got the job done and it never let us down. One key, one start...or something like that. We were 52Deltas (generator grease monkeys) but with a welder, a generator and air compressor on board we stopped to fix or help fix a lot of broken equipment that wasn't in our wheelhouse.
The picture isn't me or my truck but it resembles what we drove.
I would take my original M151A2 any day over any HUMMV I drove during my career. I realize that a HUMMV may be better for physical protection as thought of by the newer generation Soldier, but I have never gotten a jeep stuck during my years of use (6 years), but I have seen and gotten a HUMMV stuck many times since put into use. If you have ever rolled a HUMMV, you know the difficulty of righting it back on all fours, a jeep I could turn over myself and have had too on several occasions in my early career.
If I could find one today to have as my own, I would buy it in a heartbeat.
