This is a stock photo of the M1 Garand. My story pretty much an "isn't". I was into service match shooting which went downhill fast when we adopted two boys. I loved the Garand fixed up for me at NWS Crane in 308. There is a Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) that you can get one from. Military didn't need to have fingerprint cards, etc., just a copy of their ID.
When my application package was reviewed, it was obvious military likely get better service because the one I got was "new". In the early '60s with the cold war in full tilt, the Government had a number of Garands refurbished to have a stockpile to fight a possible invasion. So the only WW-2 components on my M-1 are the Winchester receiver and the stock. Everything else was new. The trigger group was likely a new spares kit from WW-2 but the barrel is a new Springfield 1964. Not bad for $280 back then.
So for you military buffs. Get a M-1 while you still can. You feel history more when you can shoot history.
