As funding changes, we are limited with what we can do in the live (real world) environment. As such we rely more and more on tools such as the convoy trainer, aviation simulators that integrate to other systems, WARSIM, VBS3, MILES, etc.

What is your opinion of these? Do we over use them? Do we not understand the various capabilities? Do you know who your Brigade or Division FA57 (Simulations Officer) is and what they bring to the fight?

The better simulators get, the more we can use them, but at some point in training a switch to the real thing has to occur. Simulation saves a ton of money in the long run though, especially when assets are limited in availability or in use in actual operations.

Absolutely Sir!

That is one of the things that we constantly talk about. You have to use the Virtual and Constructive environment properly to help facilitate live training. Granted you aren't going to always (maybe ever in your career) have the opportunity to do Brigade size maneuvers, however, there are many other things you can do to help train and enable.

The big thing is to use what is available as a tool to increase readiness and facilitate live training.

Gentlemen disagree. This new generation is so stuck on getting inside and being comfortable. ESPECIALLY the National Guard. When I was active duty I was evolved in 2 brigade training exercises. in my 12 years of the National Guard I have only had 2 Battalion exercises and I was Infantry then and it was before 9/11.
I personally think we are to wrapped up on getting the classes that are redundant as hell, and get out of the armories and do some training! We have drivers that are not proficient, gunners that really don't know how to shoot and maneuver. If we go back to combat we need to know how to shoot on the move. Right now we go to a range, load the weapon, drive to the target, STOP the vehicle, then fire, make the weapon safe then take off again. When firing in a convoy how many time did you stop the truck to shoot at the enemy. or did you shoot while moving to clear the area! attack the objective!
we need to get back to the basics and get OUT and train.

LCDR (Join to see) Sir an excellent example of a Live Training training enabler, however, more of a TADSS item than a simulator/simulation.

Sorry in the Navy we just like shooting each other and MILES gives me a headache. Since MILES was on the list and I bought this system to replace it I thought it was in the same family. We even used Paint ball in our shoot houses for a while

Beats MILES by a damned sight. Might not have the same ballistics as an actual round, but at least you aren't protected by the thinnest of cover.
