I'm curious to hear what others think about Mandatory Civil Service. Other countries do this but obviously we don't in the US.

The basis is when you turn a certain age, like 21, you enter into some form of government service for a few years. Military service or another form like Peace Corp. Once your time is up, you can either stay in or opt out and you've completed your mandatory civil service requirement.

While it's a great idea in theory I think in application its poor idea. First, it's hard to control your in coming numbers which would stretch budgets thin. If it's mandatory, at some point whether they go military or Peace corp, we'd have to pay them. Ouch.

But bigger than that is I like that we have an all volunteer service. Not everyone can serve and nor should they. It's an honor and privilege to serve.

I'd like to hear others and their opinions on this.

I think it would be a good idea to make it mandatory in the US for all 18-25 year old citizens to perform 2 years of civil service (military, law enforcement, fire-fighter, etc.) I believe this would be a good idea because it would give their lives some much needed order, purpose, and direction while making our country a better place at the same time. What are your opinions, if any on this?
