What is your opinion on those who used military school $$ but freak out when called for deployment?

We had an attached medical unit called up for Desert Storm deployment. I was there to witness reactions of those medical professionals in formation openly freaking out to hear the orders being read; actually crying and wailing about their 'medical practices' while ignoring the fact they had an obligation for the extensive tax $$ that put them through school. Professionally embarrassing to see that.

We had the same thing happen when I was in my undergrad program. Our local NG unit was mobilized for Desert Storm, and a number of my college classmates (who were all in that unit) started complaining "I joined to go to college, not to go to war!" That was their first big lesson in the relationship between risk and return. In order to get the return (college money), they had to bear the risk (possible deployment). You can't separate the two. They found very little sympathy in that highly conservative part of the country.

COL John Hudson, unfortunately this isn't limited to just medical types. There was no end to the wailing and gnashing of teeth when Big Blue sent down orders for deployments to Iraq and/or Afghanistan. "But I'm taking college classes!" and "I just signed up for college money not to deploy!" was heard from one end of the base to the other.

Unprofessional SOBs need to be outed for the fair-weather Soldiers that they are.
To be upset is natural, for some who have commitments. I was by no means thrilled to leave my family repeatedly over the years. But to throw a tantrum in front of people is frankly beyond the pale and should be obliterated by every Senior NCO and officer in earshot.
Those who fake injury, illness, or pregnancy should be dealt with very harshly.
