United States Air Force. The sky watches over the land and sea, and we watch over the sky.

The ground holds up the sky? The ground contains the seas? Football is a Ground Acquisition game?

SPC Kirk Gilles - "Violent ground acquisition games like football are in fact crypto-fascist metaphors for nuclear war." - Robert Downey, Jr. Back to School. 1986.

The way the Coast Guard takes folks in under open contracts and lets US choose our career fields after we've seen then in action - and not making us choose them based on what Uncle Ernie told us (when he served 15 years ago), or on recruiter propaganda videos.

The way the Coast Guard gives the authority and responsibility to junior enlisted folks in ways that the other services can't imagine.

The way that the Coast Guard is the ONLY branch that allows senior enlisted folks to gain full COMMAND of units - with full UCMJ authority - and none of the other services will even THINK of doing that. No - it's not just NCOIC authority - it's actual command with all the rights, benefits, and pitfalls.

The way the Coast Guard does our assignment process. 95%+ of our assignments occur during the summer months - so kids don't get yanked out of school. You know when you are up for transfer, and you get a list of billets available for your rate/rank and rating/MOS/AFSC. You get to go home and go through that list with your significant other and choose where you want to go - and over 85% of our folks get one of their top three picks - and over 99% get one of their top five picks.

An LCAC isn't a stand-alone unit, they are attached to a larger command unit, with an Officer in Command of all of them. All the CPO+ is, is a glorified coxswain.

Mark, after 20 years of "knowing" we were the only ones, I learned something today about our Security Detachments. Question: do they have unique nomenclature or unit identifiers?
And to point out something else - every NCO does NOT have full UCMJ authority - they cannot impose Article 15 punishments or recommend folks for Courts Martial.

Master Chief you definitely got the part about giving authority and responsibility to junior enlisted folks right! My lead PO's would give us as much responsibility as we wanted to take on. At 19 I got to work on a main propulsion gas turbine on a 378 by myself. Pretty awesome.

MCPO (Join to see) - Even today I will give my high school students as much authority and responsibility as they want to take on. Pretty amazing what some students can do when you show a little trust in them.

In my sole opinion, that all the branches of the military are the best that each branch has their own unique purpose that is unified to achieve one common goal.

Well, it's the branch that I am in, that is why it's the best. IF I were AF, then AF would be best. But I'm not so it isn't. Same with Navy and Marines.
