my 16 yr old son will be a Jr in HS this September. His wants to get his Eagle by May 2018 so he can sign up for a split training, Go to BCT next summer between jr & sr yr & then graduate HS & then AIT.
He wants to be a 68W. He wants to help save soldiers lives but he does not want to be in a clinic. He's always wanted to be a solider but recently focused on being a medic. What MOS do you suggest

He originally wanted to be 11B. But the more he thought about it the more he said he wanted to be a medic. But he had concerns. He is a very very...linear boy. But he is also very religious. He said he thought he would be good at being a medic but he had concerns about "Fighting against Gods will" He felt that if someone might die in combat its gods will. I explained that sometimes Gods will is that they live - and he uses the soldiers and medics as his hands. From that point on he wanted to be a medic. Now he isnt overbearing in his beliefs - he just believes in an active and present God. He wants to serve.

Also as a 16 yr old boy he finds himself wondering what sort of man he is. He wants to be tested. Thus the desire to be in combat I think. His grandfather was a combat vetern from vietnam and I think that drives his thinking. I know this will change as he matures - he is only 16...and 16 year old boys think they are immortal.

But if he wants to be 68W - I want to get him the paramedic test materials now and help him start studying. Its sort of how I roll... My eldest was nagged constantly to practice for asvab and DLAB etc and ended up getting top scores. I know once they enlist its out of my hands...so I just want them as prepared as possible for life. (I know...Im a total helicopter mom but its the only way I know to prepare to let go is prepare them for the flight).

Tell him to go to ROTC/college. If he still has questions in his heart regarding God's will and life in general, he isn't going to be ready to be a combat medic. A medic has no time to question the morality and theology behind war as their primary concern is risking everything to save someone injured on the battlefield. He shouldn't sign his name on the line until he understands that God's will works through his hands on the battlefield.

I think you are on the right track. Give him all the tools to succeed. You may look into the Navy Corpsman program, as they will usually be on the field with the Marines. God's blessings on him!

Avoid 68W, 11B, and all combat specialties. Get a technical, administrative, or logistics MOS.

Remember, if your son gets wounded or PTSD, the army or VA will not take care of him well.

Im very familiar with the VA and the Army. Both my parents are Vietnam Era Vets - I am also familiar with how they handle PTSD. I have fought with the VA on a variety of issues on behalf of my parents. And won....

While I would hate for my son to be wounded or end up with PTSD - those are not reasons to avoid combat specialties. Compabt Specialties are why we have the freedoms and liberties we do and I personally feel that i would by a hypocrite to forbid my son this sort of service if it is in fact in his heart - while other peoples sons, daughters and spouses risk their lives. The idea frightens me - but I would not tell my son no. It is his choice and he has always had the heart of a warrior - always. I will support him in what ever he decides.

Ok, it's up to you all, if you think the wars the USA has been fighting recently are about defending our freedom.

Quite a few of the greatest heros were conscientious objectors. As a medic I think it is doing God"s will. Remember the good Samaritan, he helped someone on the road to Jericho, even priest passed the man. Of Course Jesus put mud on the blind man and restored his sight. I should think He knew God's will. Not an easy job, but perhaps the best.

Hes not a CO - not that there is anything wrong with that. He wants to be a combat medic and help that way - but has zero issues with guns or combat.
