As a newly minted clinical nurse with previous EMS experience, I've decided to specialize as an ICU nurse. My goal is to apply these skills not only in the hospital setting, but also far forward on the edge of the battle area. What opportunities, aside from specialized surgical teams, would allow me to make use of these skills and abilities?

Look up Congressional fellowship, and also submit to the White House fellow program, as well....

And I know you prob don't want this, however, you likely know the svcs have an intersvc PA program I think at Ft Sam Houston, ask to be an instructor there perhaps, also, look up the Army Inst for Surg Research, I think at Ft Huachuca, ask to do a tour with them, or in any of the surf geno offs, or with HHS, for the USPJS surf genl or their asst surf genl or equiv for nursing as well....

What opportunities are there to expand my skillset as a newly pinned RN with experience?

I doubt as an ICU Nurse you can get a front line position. FAST teams have slots for CRNAs and I also believe OR nurses

I doubt you would see ICU in a Fwd MASH- they slap you back together, and send you out for more/serious OPS.

Trust !e, look at their nursing page, and their programs about assignment to the regular svcs as USPHS esp for psych related fields, as well as their COSTEP, their analogue to ROTF, which might he usable for grad level, of you'd ever want to go intersvc at all...also, try to volunteer with Navy on board the hospital ships USMS Mercy and/or Comfort or an aircraft Cartier to do a tour wit them, as well, maybe also with USMC through Navy, !maybe Army, also USCG, and also the NOAA Commissioned Corps, which generally uses USPHS, USCG uses its own PAs, their other clinical stuff is typ USPHS, ask to do am exchange tour with USPHS, maybe with NIH, FDA, CDC, AHRQ, also ask to do an exchange tour with FEMA possibly, as well, or see of you can get into the defense attache program as clinical staff, or try for Rhodes scholar as military, look that up, it's been done many times, though I don't know if for nursing, also, ask to do exchange tours in other countries, allies, UK, Canada, Australia, etc., that's also I think quite possible, you know?
