Besides tithe issued equipment that are going to be brought downrange regardless of if you like it or not, what item(s) would you tell one of your first timers to make sure to bring to either make their life easier or perhaps just more bearable?

Hmmm, I served before cell phones so my frame of reference is outdated. I would say to bring music, a book or two, deck of cards, your own roll of 100mph tape and at least 100 ft of 550 cord. Also a good quality multi tool. Nowadays a cell phone is a must. Can hold music, books, compass, flashlight, GPS, internet, etc., all on one device.
