At around the 12 minute mark, the cannons fire. It gets my blood flowing. To think that Artillery can be used in the creation of something beautiful. So I ask What Piece of music stirs your soul? For me there are many, but this is near the top.

"Eternal Father Strong to Save" - (music: Dykes, lyrics: Whiting) Adopted as the Naval Hymn (British and American), this piece speaks to Psalm 107 --mutual respect for the relationship between the briny and those who are serving/have served upon her, the realized peril, and respect her power. Its melody and harmonies are unparalleled for driving reverence to my sea-borne brethren, their work.

Capt Mark Strobl I freely admit this brought a tear to my eye. The visual combined with the haunting vocals. Thank you for sharing this.

I have a copy of an older Armed Forces Hymnal in which Navy Hymn appears with 16 verses. In addition to the 'original' three which are also commonly found in many church hymnals, there are individual verses for Navy medical, the Marine Corps, the Submarine Service (I was a submariner so this one is really special for me), Naval air, our families and loved ones, ships being commissioned, ships being decommissioned, and even Operation Deep Freeze and Naval astronauts. It's just amazing!

I remember a stand up comic once commenting on bagpipes (with a thick Scottish brogue) "Aye Laddie, let's invent some sort of musical instrument, something that will really piss people off." I suppose many have good reason to find the sound annoying. But never while playing Amazing Grace. In that one piece it really shines...

The song itself has an amazing backstory. It was written by a sea captain who left the slave trade after his last voyage in which he feared he was lost in a violent storm. Falling to his knees, he prayed for salvation promising to be a better man.

The interesting part is that I don't even consider it a Christian song. It can stir anyone's soul regardless of belief.

PO3 Steven Sherrill - it's been used in military, police, and fire funerals, yes, and with incredibly emotional results. But I can't call it a funeral song. It's about the only religious hymn that stirs my ever-decreasing lack of religious inclinations.

SCPO (Join to see) - I've never really considered it a religious song. Yes, it's sung in houses of worship, but then so is America the Beautiful, God Bless America, and the Star Spangled Banner. It makes no mention of God or any other religious figure. It is a simple song of wonder asking what amazing grace saved a wretch such as me? I have often asked the same thing myself.

CPT Jack Durish - it resonates with me, Jack. Maybe one or two hymns like it do also, but that's all that do.

Good classical list, Sir. For Mussorgsky you have to be talking about the orchestrations Ravel did for him though, right? The plain old piano music originals aren't that interesting.

LTC Paul Labrador - Great list! I have had the pleasure of playing in an Orchestra that performed your classical music list. As a Bassoonist, I really enjoyed playing "In the Hall of the Mountain King", because I had a solo in that one!

SSgt Mark Lines - I fell in love with those songs when I was marching Drum Corps. Nothing like listening to those pieces played by a 60 piece brass choir!
