Please read your regulations Sergeant, after all, you ARE a leader and should know your regulations in the event your soldiers ask you.

The Army Overseas Service Ribbon (OSR) was established by the Secretary of the Army on April 10, 1981. Effective August 1, 1981, the Army OSR is awarded to all members of the Active Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve in an active Reserve status for successful completion of overseas tours.

I've been out awhile and don't know all the rules regarding Iraq/Afghanistan, but basically you must complete an overseas tour which is eligible for the OSR. I don't remember which reg it is in but should be the 600 series, maybe 670-1.

It appears that I'm eligible for it, based on my service in Korea. (Apparently Viet Nam doesn't count for me since I was medevac'd mid-tour.) How do I apply for it, or is it automatic?

You just have to contact your S1 and show them the regs. I got one for my time in korea, but it took forever. People kept telling me I wasn't eligible because i earned the KDSM. Regs changed.

My S-1? :) I've been out since late '75. I'm not sure if the S-1 Officer is still with us.

S1 will always ask for a source document. It can be your orders, award, evaluation. Hopefully you have them. The tough reality about awards is, no papers = no award.

You can be awarded the medal for an OCONUS tour but you must complete that tour first. I've been in Germany for 2 years but I can get that oakleaf cluster until I satisfy my OCONUS obligation.

But what dictates the end of the tour? Cause I could complete a tour here in Kuwait, like get all the way to the end of the orders and the time here, but they are still saying not eligible.

I was assigned to Okinawa with a Top Secret to guard the nerve gas depot prior to Operation Red Hat 1968 to 1970 then to Sieglesbach,Germany as a kennel master at the weapons depot. My question is,does any of this overseas time qualify for any overseas ribbons.

You will need to look and see what the regulation says on that time period. AR 600-8-22
