What questions would someone need to ask him/herself while trying to decide between a mechanical engineering and finance career path?

If your friend find they love figuring out how everything is built and has ideas on how to improve on what they see. I suggest that Mechanical engineering for them but they will have a challenging time with any engineering school.
I have a Finance degree, an MBA, and Juris Doctorate. I found out that finance only qualified me to sell investment and insurance products. I decided to go into software engineering.
So my advice is pursue engineering and you will learn finance because comparitively, it is easy math and statistics.

I took a similar path but never went higher than a BBA in Finance. Couple Finance with a Technical degree or computer programming experience........jobs will be looking for you vs the other way around. I still can't believe all the cool positions I have held........including the latest one. :) I do see your other point though Finance Degree without anything else I think the choices were: 1. Banker, 2. Insurance Underwriter, 3. Selling Financial Products for Fidelity, etc. 3. Financial Analyst (where they want you to get a CPA at some point).

I thought you were already in school? Because this really seems like something you should figure out before you start, given the vast difference in training. That said, I suppose the obvious question is which appeals to you more, making loads more money than you would tinkering...or having fun doing said tinkering.

SN Greg Wright - I agree with you. I told him engineering jobs are in high demand right now and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

MSgt (Join to see) I agree. My civilian job was high stress, and I tired of the long hours, but I missed it deeply when it ended.
