I'm no ribbon chaser, but I've had this question asked many times: why do basically trained service members only get one medal after training? As a reservist I feel we could be eligible for other options. I've volunteered enough to be eligible for the outstanding volunteer service medal. Is there anything else?

This is all I earned during my 12 years, on active duty, 1977 -1989. Not like it is nowadays with all the medals for the wars but I am proud of each one of them as it is my history in the Corps.

Other than the "Alive in 85" (pick your own year) and the Reserve version of the GCM, you're limited to what you can control. You can get some for shooting skills. Other than that, you have to go out and do something beyond showing up on weekends. Go for that IA or lead that Det. My take is if you make the most of your time as a MIL, the fruit salad tends to follow.

In the Corps it was hard to earn any ribbons/medals. After 4 years active duty from 01-05 i think i got out with 5 ribbons. In my 8 years in the Army i think i have too many to count now.
